Who?

Who should consider going to Woodland Church?

Q: Our family just moved to the area, and we're looking for a church. I've never been to your church, but I'd like to see what it's like. Would you mind if we just dropped in on Sunday? A: Welcome to the neighborhood! We're glad that you're interested, and we certainly don't mind if you visit. In fact, we recommend it. Visitors should attend our Sunday services and try out any of our classes that they wish. We currently have a combined service that incorporates most elements of a contemporary service with some features of a traditional service. You are welcome to stop in any time to see what it's all about. Our congregation enjoys having the opportunity to welcome new people to the neighborhood.
(If you'd like to find out more about the services, click the services button to get the details.)

Q: I've never attended any church before, but I'm curious about it. Do I have to be a church member to attend your services? A: No, you do not have to be a member to attend any of our classes or services. They are open to the public, and you're more than welcome to attend at any time. We enjoy having visitors, and we hope that you'll stop in. If you like it, you're also welcome to come back again and again.

Q: I'm single, and I live in an apartment near your building. I keep thinking that it would be great to be able to go to a church so close to where I live, but I don't know anyone there. Wouldn't someone like me feel out of place? A: Don’t worry, our members will do their best to make you feel at-home. We understand that it is difficult to know where to go and what to do when you are in unfamiliar surroundings. People who are new to the community often drop in for a visit, and our members are always willing to help them find their way around. This website is designed to help you learn more about us before your visit. If you need help when you arrive, any church member will be glad to help.

Q: My mother is elderly and in a wheelchair. Are there any stairs to navigate in your church? A: Yes, we do have stairs that lead to the children's Sunday School rooms, the pre-school wing, and the basement, but the main entrance provides easy, single level access to most of the facility. The Sanctuary, where our services are held, and the main lobby are both on the ground floor. In addition, you also have direct access to the chapel, the church offices, and the parlor, where you'll find our teen to adult Sunday School class.

Q: My wife and I were never very comfortable at the church we used to attend. We were sometimes called upon, without prior warning, to speak in front of the entire congregation or to lead a prayer. Neither she nor I really like public speaking. Should we expect that sort of thing to happen, if we attend your church? A: Every church is run in different ways--even some churches within the same denomination. The uncomfortable situation that you describe was undoubtedly an unintentional consequence of a common method of operation that works for many people, but not for all. Rest assured that, most of the time, prayers at Woodland are led by the pastor or the person in charge of the particular service or class. If there were a need for you to speak publicly, a private request would be made far in advance of the occasion, and you could feel perfectly free to decline. We understand that some people are not comfortable speaking in front of groups of people. You would never be put "on the spot" with such a request at Woodland.

What?

What does the Church have to offer?

Q: My wife and I like our local schools, and we know that our kids get a good education. But, we're concerned that they are not getting as much moral guidance as we received when we were their age. At school, they sometimes see or hear things that we don't want them to emulate. We do a pretty good job of letting them know what is OK and what is not, but it would be good to have some additional re-enforcement. Can the Church help us in any way? A: Your concern is certainly valid. Many parents are realizing that their children are missing out on a vital part of their education when they don't attend church. Learning about God and Jesus Christ is an important and enriching experience for young children that helps them to better understand the meaning of life. The Church can help them see why they should treat others with respect and kindness as well as help them to understand that there are some people that they will encounter who do not. Woodland Church has a wonderful Sunday school program that teaches children lessons from the Bible and helps them see how God's word applies to their lives. The messages they receive each week will help to re-enforce your efforts to guide your kids in the right direction.

Q: I've tried bringing my infant to services at a few different churches in the past, but I just couldn't seem to keep her happy and quiet through an entire worship service. Eventually, I just stopped going to church. Do you have any kind of child care available at Woodland during your services? A: Yes, Woodland does have a nursery for both infant and toddler care during our services. The adults that staff the nursery are church members who volunteer their time to help out. If you?d like to take advantage of this free service, just ask our main entrance greeters or any member, and they?ll be glad to direct you.

Q: My husband and I enjoy discussion groups. In particular, we're interested in how the Bible applies to modern-day life. Is there any kind of class like that available in your church? A: The Teen to Adult Sunday School class would be ideal for you and your spouse. It starts at the same time as the combined worship service. Anyone who would like to attend that class is welcome to stop in. Be sure to check the class schedules on the Services page. This class often takes a break over the summer months, so you may wish to call to find out when they next meet. From time to time throughout the year, we also sometimes have special bible study groups that meet on weeknights.

Q: Our two children are in middle school and high school. What programs do you have that might appeal to them? A: Woodland has an excellent teen Sunday School class that meets with our adults, and we have a youth group that usually meets a couple of times each month and sponsors fun-filled events for teenagers. Young people also occasionally choose to participate in small plays for special worship services. In the Summer, teens who prefer an alternative to the adult service come together with our younger children and help with crafts and activities during the combined service.

Q: My work schedule doesn't let me attend church on a regular basis. My employer does try to arrange the schedule so that I can make it to church now and then. Are there any weeks that might be considered special events that I should try to attend? A: We always have very special services for Christmas and Easter. Details on those and other special events can be found in the Woodland News section, and announcements for upcoming events will be in the Broadcaster when they are scheduled. We also have some services throughout the year that are preceded by a breakfast or followed by a luncheon in our dining hall.

Q: I used to love singing in the choir of my parents church. Do you have a church choir that I could join? A: Yes, Woodland has both a Chancel Choir and a Handbell Choir. Both are a significant and very much enjoyed part of our services. Chancel choir rehearsals are held on Wednesday nights. We have an excellent music director, and for special events, he schedules special rehearsals for the handbell choir.

Q: I'm an amateur musician who can play piano as well as guitar, and I can also sing. I was wondering if there might be anywhere at Woodland that I could volunteer to help out musically? It would be great practice for me. A: Thank you for volunteering your musical talents. We sometimes have guest musicians and vocalists at our services. Depending upon our current needs and the instruments that you prefer to play, we may also be open to the possibility of making an addition to our Rock Solid Band for our contemporary service. Our music director (Found on the "Contact Us" page) will be glad to speak with you concerning the Church's musical needs.

Q: In the church that I attended in my old neighborhood, we had a women’s group that met periodically. Would I find anything similar at your church? A: The United Methodist Women have regular meetings each month. Look in the Broadcaster, (it can be accessed from the main "Woodland News" page) for the meeting times for Dorcas Circle, Lydia Circle, and Sunday circle.

Q: I would like to find out more about Woodland Preschool. Is there any information on this site about it? A: Woodland Preschool and Pre-K is a service that Woodland Church enjoys helping to bring to the neighborhood. It operates as a separate organization within our facility. We post announcements about preschool events on our "Home" page, We also have a "Preschool" page on our site devoted to information about the preschool. The school is open on weekdays, and you can reach them by phone at (330)867-4311.

Where?

Where is the Church, and where are activities held?

Q: How do I get to your Church? A: Akron's Market Street runs all the way across town from west to east. If heading west on West Market street turn left onto Bryden and then left onto North Hawkins Avenue. If heading east on West Market Street, turn right onto North Hawkins Avenue. This area of Akron is commonly called Wallhaven. From there, if you follow Hawkins to the north and continue a few blocks past the railroad crossing, you’ll find Woodland Church on the left side, next to the Army National Guard facility.
( Press the button labelled Contact Us to link to a map of the area.)

Q: I usually ride the bus. Are there any stops near the church? A: Yes, in fact there are stops on Thurmont, beside the church, and on North Hawkins, in front of the church. Click on the bus to check for scedules at the Metro website.

Q: Your church seems to have a lot of exterior doors. Which one should I use if I want to attend one of Woodland's Sunday morning services? A: Our parking lot is tucked behind the church, so just about everyone enters through the main double-doors on the back of the building. During the winter, the vestibule at the rear entrance serves as a buffer to the frigid outdoor temperatures. Because of this, the front doors are seldomly used in inclement weather, and the north entrance is only used by the Preschool. Since the main doors at the rear are the most heavily used, it is best to use these doors for Sunday morning services

Q: Where are the worship services held in your church? A: The services are held in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings. From the outside, you'll recognize the Sancuary as the tall part of the building with the steeple. Be sure to arrive a little early so that you can stop and enjoy the Coffee and danish in the main entry hall before each service begins. You can enter the church at the rear of the building. Proceed to the Sanctuary by going through the large double doors on the right..

Q: If my daughter wanted to go to the youth group meeting, where should she go? A: The church youth group often meets at Woodland church in the youth room or the church dining hall, but it also occasionally meets at other locations for special activities. We recommend that you call or e-mail the church to find out the time and location of the next meeting. Be sure to provide your name and phone number, so that our Youth Director can keep you informed if there are any last minute changes.

Q: I want to try out your adult Sunday school class. Where does that class meet? A: The Adult Class is held in the church parlor. The class includes both adults and teens, who use a special teen-oriented text for the same lesson. When you enter the church through the main double doors at the rear, make a left at the first hallway. Then enter the first classroom on the left. You'll know that you're in the right place when you see sofa's and a lot of very comfortable furniture. You'll also notice that a small part of the church library is also located in this room.

When?

When do classes and services meet?

Q: I work on Sundays, so I can’t really attend any service that doesn’t let out until noon. Do you have anything early for people like me? A: Our services are designed to help people like you, who have commitments during the day but would still like to attend church. The service starts at 9:30 AM every Sunday morning and ends a little before 10:30 AM. If you have children, the children’s Sunday School classes meet at the same time as this contemporary service. The children’s program is designed to be make our Sunday morning services convenient for the entire family.

Another option for you would be to attend the Adult Sunday School class, which meets on Sunday mornings along with our teens at 9:30 A.M. and also ends around 10:30 A.M.

Q: We used to take our school age kids to church from time to time. They liked the songs that we sang in the church, but the message was really aimed at adults, and they couldn't follow it very well. Even though I enjoyed the service and thought that it was great, we eventually stopped going because the kids got bored. Is there any kind of alternative program for kids during your services? A: Some school age children enjoy attending services with the adults and others do not. For the latter, we provide an alternative at Woodland. Our children's Sunday School starts at the exact same time as the combined Worship Service: 9:30 A.M.. This allows the children to attend at the same time as the adults, but receive a message that is designed for people in their age group. At Woodland, we've worked to transform going to church on Sunday into a weekly event that everyone enjoys.

Q: o I'm planning to drop my kids off for Sunday School on Sunday mornings. What time should I bring them there and what time should I pick them up? A: All Sunday School classes start at 9:30 AM and end at 10:30 AM. You might want to let the kids have a few extra minutes before or after Sunday School, so they can have a doughnut and some juice. Before you drop the children off for the first time, please call or e-mail the church. Their Sunday School teacher will be able to prepare for the additional students and look for them to arrive.

Q: When does your Youth Group usually meet? A: The Youth Group normally meets on Sunday evenings a couple of times a month during Fall, Winter and Spring. Times for meetings sometimes vary to accommodate their activities, so you should contact the church to confirm the time of the next meeting. Also give them your name and number, so you can be notified if there are any last minute changes. They usually only meet for special activities in the Summer months.
